Having a portfolio as a writer is one of the most important decision you can make.

Skills are equally important for a writer just as it is for every other person out there.

Knowing how to write is barely enough. If you lack the necessary skills to back you up as a writer, it will be hard to get to the AHA moment.

That is the point where you feel confident in your ability as a writer because there are other skills to support you along the way.

It is not only compulsory but necessary that you have a portfolio as a writer if you want to be taken seriously.

Brand Storytelling

Brand storytelling is an important part of a writer’s journey.

This is positioning a brand and communicate their ideas which can be products or the services they render.

What you do here as a writer is closely related to content marketing.

A writer needs to add brand storytelling to his portfolio because he has to bridge the gap between the brand and its customers.

Stories appeal more to people and brands won’t hesitate to capture the reader’s attention with such, this is where you come in as a writer.

The task of communicating what the brand stands for to the audience is called brand storytelling.

The truth is that brand storytelling is not just important but highly critical to the success of the brand.

It is equally important to how the audience relates to the brand’s products or services.

Storytelling comes in various ways, from oral tradition, paintings, newspapers to radio, television, etc.

These aforementioned avenue helps communicate the stories of brands in their unique form.

Finally, brand storytelling is the stories of the inception of a brand, the reason behind its existence, and the projection it has for the future.

It helps you engage your customers on the features of your products or the services you offer.

Blogging is one of the skills you need to add to your portfolio as a writer.

You might want to ask why do I need blogging as a writer?

The answer to your question is simple, blogging essentially helps you document your thoughts in series for your readers.

Another importance of blogging is that gives you an edge over other writers when a vacancy for a writer is announced.

Most writing jobs demand that the candidate have blogging experience to connect more with the employer’s audience.

Writing For Social Media

Another skill a writer must add to his portfolio is how to write for social media.

Social media in over a decade of its existence has become a go-to platform for people of varied backgrounds searching for one thing or the other.

Each social media platform has its uniqueness.

As a writer, you should always have it in mind that what works for Instagram might become a disaster if such is tried on Twitter or Facebook.

Remember writing a long article on Instagram is a major flop you don’t want to commit as a writer.

Your audience won’t have much time to read them. So try to make it short and capture their interaction.

The attention span of your audience is limited, so do your best to write engaging social media content that will appeal to them.

This can be done by breaking your message into series to help communicate better.

Writing for social media can be interacting yet dangerous if not presented clearly.

If you are writing for social media, it is expedient to add information about sales, special deals, or even funny pictures that your audience can relate to.

However, be mindful that your post is not derailing in its objectives which is to appeal to the audience.

Lastly, learn about the customer’s interest by first putting yourself in their position.

If you see what you have written, would it appeal to you? What action will you take next? Answer that first.

The most important tip you should take away from this article is to make use of photos, gifs, memes, and short quotes when writing for social media.

Remember to add the essential information about your brand, products, or services in them.

This is where mastering the art of writing for social media comes in.

Perhaps the most important part of all these skills is copywriting.

As a writer myself, I recommend that you do everything in your capacity to learn the art of copywriting.

I hear a lot of writers say that they are not interested in copywriting.

The argument often pushed forward is that copywriting is for marketing professionals or salesmen and I burst out laughing.

How ignorant can you be to utter such a statement?

I am sorry to disappoint you, every writer must learn the art of crafting good copies.

Copywriting helps you find out details about the audience you want to write to.

Good copywriters make in-depth research on the copies they intend to create.helps you communicate with your audience on a personalized level.

That is, when customers read your copies, they immediately feel you know much about them and they mirror themselves in the message you are passing.

To be frank with you, copywriting is about the customers and not just the company.

Lastly one of the reasons why you should add copywriting to your portfolio as a writer is because it is one of the fields that pay the most.

Yes, quote me anywhere. I said that and you can bring your police to arrest me if you find out that I lied to you.

Companies don’t joke with writers who know how to craft copies because they ultimately influence customers’ decisions on the products or services.

Copywriters are one of the highest-paid in the creative industry especially in developed countries like the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and the list goes on and on.

Design skills

If you are an African, a Nigerian to be precise, it is important that you know how to manipulate photos and text.

The main reason for the above submission is that in Africa, particularly Nigeria, employers most times don’t give a damn about your area of specialization.

They want one person to carry out a task that is meant for two, three individuals. So the burdens now lie on you.

For instance, when job positions are advertised, you will see “Social Media and Content Writer” or “Content Writer/Social Media Manager.”

That is a combination of two different fields into one which in most developed climes cannot fly.

So having an eye for design can help push you as a writer.

Design tools like photoshop, canvas, and others can serve as a relief to you as a writer.

In conclusion, it is my hope that you have found the knowledge needed as a writer in this article.

I also hope that you will make conscious efforts to add the skills discussed above to your portfolio.

See you at the top.
